Serena Sussex an artist based in Brighton, is inspired by the ever changing hypnotic beauty of the surrounding Sussex countryside.
The wonders of nature and the environment are the key
focal points of Serena's recent work and, in particular,
the great outdoors; calm and tranquil places and hidden
locations which portray an air of mystery. Her paintings
reflect a sense of solitude and the timeless allure of
quiet open spaces, which are becoming increasingly
elusive treasures in this fast-changing world.
Serena has undertaken many studies, including a B/Tec
Diploma in window dressing at The College of
Distributive Trades in London, but her greatest teacher
continues to be nature itself.
As a dedicated photographer she has travelled
extensively in South East Asia and America. It is her
keen photographic eye that enables Serena to infuse her
paintings with such a sense of perspective and
scale.
Serena has developed her own unique technique of oil
painting on canvas, which involves removing part of the
focal image to reveal the base colour underneath before
the work completely dries.
Serena won the title of
Brighton Artist 2005. Her
winning artwork Woodlands Walk was chosen for
the front cover of the debut album of Brighton based
band The loveGods.
She was also selected from 3000
people to recreate Holbein's Henry VIII together with
107 other artists as part of the BBC's Rolf On Art - The Big Event
, which
was broadcast live from Trafalgar Square, London.
Summer 2006, Serena plus famous
stars (Norman Cook, The Kooks, Cheeky Girls, Barry
McGuigan, Phil Tufnell, Barbara Windsor, Michael Watson,
Franz Ferdinand, Carol Cleaveland, Patsy Palmer, Sharon
Osborne, Simon Cowell, David Marks, Bill Bailey, Ian
Botham, Charlie Baldwin, Harry Enfield,) where asked by
Julie Anne Gilburt to paint a 20x20cm canvas for the
Whoopsadaisy Charity
auction.
Serena was selected as one of the top 10 artists in
Brighton to take part in a 10 week Seeking Picasso art
competition, and came 4th in the worlds first
internet-based infotainment reality show for artists.
